Office Hours Assistant
Title
Office Hours Savior
Position Reports to
Volunteer Coordinator
Job Purpose Summary
Monday through Thursday from 3-5pm two of our counseling staff answer our toll free line. This time period gets seriously hectic! This is a time that clients are promised that they can always get a hold of us to request supplies, get resource information, or just check-in with someone. In the last couple of years the bulk of phone calls and requests of supplies during that time has become overwhelming. Having other people around to pack up food boxes, keep the office in order, and help in a variety of other ways will make our office hours time much more successful (and less stressful). We want to have clients feel cared for and attended to during this time, help us make that happen more consistently.
Key responsibilities and Accountabilities
• Packing Food boxes
• Gathering other supplies
• General maintenance of the office space (pretty unlimited, there’s always something to do!)
Training Provided:
• An organizational and office introduction: 2 hours
• Shadow a staff person completing your tasks: 4 hours
• Additional training as needed or desired
Position Details
We need volunteers that can come to our office one day a week, two hours a day, for a commitment of at least six months. The hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 3-5pm.

Outreach Volunteer
At The Crossroads is looking for committed volunteers to support its street outreach to homeless youth. As an Outreach Volunteer you will have the opportunity to work directly with homeless youth in the Mission District and/or Downtown San Francisco.
Responsibilities
One night a week or every other week, each volunteer will accompany staff as they walk around either the Mission or Downtown San Francisco, talking to youth and distributing food, hygiene supplies, condoms, and harm reduction supplies such as clean cookers and alcohol pads. Although volunteers’ primary responsibility will be to support staff on outreach, over time, volunteers have the opportunity to build relationships with folks as they gain a better understanding of the program and the youth.
Expectations
As you may understand, it can be difficult to find a replacement if someone is unable to make your outreach night. You will be expected to contact the appropriate person(s), in a timely manner, if you are not able to make your shift. At the same time, if you are contacted for your availability to cover a shift, please reply as soon as possible. Also, to initiate your own personal growth with us and to help Outreach Counselors improve in their work, you will be asked to give us feedback and receive feedback about your outreach night and our program in general.
Qualifications
In order to work effectively with the population we target, you must be comfortable with street youth (ages 14 – 29+), and be comfortable working at night on the streets in “low-income” neighborhoods. Our work depends on excellent communications skills and an open, non-judgmental attitude toward youth. Previous experience working with homeless youth populations, gang-associated youth, drug-addicted youth, and/or youth working in street economies is favorable. General volunteer experience is a plus, and priority is given to volunteers who meet the most diverse outreach needs, for example bilingual candidates.
Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age. If in recovery, volunteers must have completed at least one year of sobriety. All volunteers will be subject to a fingerprint background check. Potential volunteers with a record will not be automatically disqualified. We will be asking you to fill out an application for this position. All candidates being considered for the position will be asked to come in for an interview. Volunteers must be able to commit to a consistent volunteering schedule, and must be able to get to and from our office on Valencia Street on their own.
We see the role of outreach volunteer as an excellent training to becoming a full time staff member. Outreach volunteers will be given priority if they express an interest in obtaining employment with ATC. In the past we have had several outreach volunteers become full time staff members. This does not mean that volunteers need to be interested in future employment in order to become an outreach volunteer.
Time Obligation
Consistency plays a big part in building a trusting relationship. Because we want our clients to get to know our volunteers, we ask that volunteers commit to working with At the Crossroads for at least six months. Each person will volunteer once each week from 6:15pm or 7:15pm until 11:00pm or midnight. This includes outreach preparation; outreach itself, and post-outreach checkout. If necessary, we will also consider volunteers who can commit to doing outreach only once every two weeks.
Prior to going on outreach, each volunteer will participate in a series of trainings. The dates for these trainings have yet to be determined, though we expect it will require a series of 3-4 two-hour trainings. A training schedule will be made based on staff and volunteers availability.

Summer SunDay Quiz Answer Key!
Before we get into the answers, a quick mea culpa: We switched the numbers to questions 6 and 7, so they had incorrect options on the signs. We gave everyone a correct answer for these two questions. Sorry for the production error. So, on to the answers:
1) ATC was founded in 1997
2) ATC has reached 5,500 youth and young adults since we started
3) ATC gives out 61,000 pounds of food in a year
4) In 2007, we started tracking 42 long-term counseling clients. In 2009, we looked at how many of them had achieved stable housing. 95% had gotten into stable housing.
5) 50% of our clients are parents
6) 100% of ATC’s budget comes from private (non-government) sources
7) 79% of our clients are people of color
8) Support empowerment, Client needs come first, Make services as accessible as possible, and Respect individuality are all Core Values of ATC

Giants Game!
You may or may not have heard the super exciting news that ATC is being honored at the Giants game on Tuesday, August 24th, and that Ms. Kristina Chance (beloved ATC counselor) will be singing the national anthem at the game. You may or may not also have heard that a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales that night will go to At The Crossroads!
On Tuesday, August 24th, at 7:15 PM, The San Francisco Giants will be playing the Cincinnati Reds, and it is called Step Up To The Plate Night. 5 local nonprofits are being honored, and ATC is one of them. There will be a pregame ceremony where one of our staff and one of our clients go on the field, and they will announce a message about ATC. Next, Kristina Chance will be singing the national anthem. And $6 from every ticket you buy will go to ATC, as long as you follow the instructions below. We hope you will join us!
It's a pretty sweet deal, we'd say. So, here's the information on how to buy those tickets (sorry, they're only available by phone). To get tickets, please follow all four steps, and ATC will get $6 for every ticket you purchase:
1. Call (415) 972-2233
2. Say that you want to get tickets for the game on Tuesday, August 24
3. Say that you want the Special Events tickets for the "Step Up To The Plate" event
4. Say that you the organization you are connected with is At The Crossroads

18 Rabbits
Inspired by mum’s recipe, Alison Bailey Vercruysse created 18 Rabbits in SF to make granola with this mantra in mind: ‘Everyone has the right to pure simple food.’ With delicious flavors like Haute Diggity Date, our hikers will appreciate her vision, too!
Affi's Marin Gourmet
Affi’s Marin Gourmet will be graciously providing our hikers with amazing all natural, freshly prepared dips from their Mediterranean inspired kitchen in San Rafael. We can't wait to nosh on their donated goods!
Andante Dairy
Has been making ATC’s community happy for years with its incredible, delectable cheeses made in nearby Petaluma. Andante has generously donated cheese for the post-hike picnic; get your bellies ready!
Bella Viva
Making sure our hikers get all the necessary nutrients to climb Tam is Bella Viva Orchards, whose amazing dried fruits will fuel as all to the top! Hikers beware: ATC has loved Bella Viva for years and we can eat. Fast.
Bi-Rite
A longtime supporter of ATC events, Bi-Rite is one of our lovely and loyal neighbors here in the Mission. They’re helping us out with a bunch of our hiking needs in the form of a gift certificate; we can’t wait to spend it!
Bryan’s Grocery
Bringing you some gourmet sandwich delights, straight out of Laurel Heights, is Bryan’s Grocery! You’ll be hungry after this hike, no doubt, and Bryan’s sandwich donation will cure whatever ails you.
Charles Chocolates
Charles (aka Chuck) Siegel is the man behind this SF-based brand, and he’s been making his renowned chocolate since 1986. He’ll be supplying our hikers with all the sugar, butter, and cacao they need to hike their hardest (or pass out from sugar comas…)!
Colibri Mexican Bistro
Although they’re only a block from Union Square, Colibri’s cuisine reflects the flavors of central Mexico. Making sure you get your greens on the mountain (and not the kind that grow on trees), Colibri is generously donating a mixed salad for the hike lunch.

Clif Bar
Clif Bars are tasty, healthy, give you energy, and are made with organic ingredients. And they’re based locally in Berkeley. Delicious and sustainable? Yes please! Clif Bars will be sustaining our hikers throughout the eight miles, too.
Della Fattoria
Della Fattoria has been a longtime supporter of ATC (and our appetites) and will be donating their brick-oven-baked, gourmet bread to Summer SunDay! Their handcrafted loaves will be the perfect snack for our hungry hikers!
Faye’s Video and Espresso Bar
Faye’s serves up its own fabulous version of peanut butter and jelly: DVDs and coffee! We think it sounds just as good and, as our neighbors right here in the Mission, we might just claim the 10 free video rentals they’re donating to the hike for our own!
G.L. Alfieri
From their family farm in Ripon, CA, G.L. Alfieri makes the best gourmet nuts and brittle in the world. No Joke! Lucky for us, they’re longtime supporters of ATC, and will be providing our hikers with their incredible products.
Galaxy Granola
Galaxy Granola is in a battle against fat (using apple sauce instead of oil), and they’re taking our hikers with them! Since it’s delicious (and free), we don’t think our hikers will mind this kind of abduction.
Gap
The Gap is a true San Francisco staple, and we are very grateful for their longtime donations to our clients and, now, to Summer SunDay! Gap is providing the t-shirts for our hikers, who will be sure to look stylish on Mt. Tam.
GirlVentures
GirlVentures is an amazing program that has empowered over 3,000 adolescent Bay Area girls through outdoor adventure, creative arts and group experiences. Rock climbers, rafters, and, yes, hikers; these awesome gals are loaning us radio communications for the hike!
Hamada Farms
Yukio Hamada and his children grow their fantastic fruit in Kingsburg, CA. From the exotic (pluots, pumelos, shaddock) to the classic (nectarines, cherries, apples) our hikers will be well taken care of by the Hamada’s generosity!

House Kombucha
House Kombucha makes its namesake (a delicious fermented tea) right here in SF and they have refill stations at several retailers around town. You can sample their generously donated product on the mountain, and meet the awesome staff (they’ll be hiking, too)!
I Melt With You
You’re going to need a serious freshening up after your 8-mile hike. Good thing I Melt With You is donating samples of their beautiful and delightfully scented artisan soap! Made in nearby Martinez, you’ll be getting clean with local goods!
K&J Orchards
Cherries and peaches and pluots, oh my! K&J Orchards is fulfilling all of our hikers’ fruit dreams with their incredible produce, all grown in Winters, CA. ATC has been enjoying K&J for years, and we’re happy to share with our hikers!
Mariposa Baking
Gluten-averse hikers, have no fear! Mariposa’s delicious artisan-crafted goodies will both energize and satisfy. You can find Mariposa at one of their two Bay Area locations (SF Ferry Building and Oakland) but we are lucky enough to have them donating!
Maury’s Massage
Based out of her beautiful home studio in Bernal Heights, Maury is an athlete completing her massage therapy certification training. Having volunteered at the San Francisco Marathon, you can bet she’ll know a thing or two about your tired, post-hike muscles!
Miette
Miette’s delightful deserts are as tasty as they are beautiful. Made in San Francisco, they’ll be generously donating their confections to the hike. We’d say they’re all the more reason to cross the finish line!
Mission Mini's
If you like your cupcakes bite sized and, um, COMPLETELY AMAZING, then Mission Minis will surely satisfy your sweet tooth. Saving the best for last, they are donating their treats to our post-hike lunch. We suggest hiking quickly, before they run out.
Mitchell's Ice Cream
Mitchell’s has been a San Francisco staple for over 50 years! They make all of their ice cream on the premises, and have flavors ranging from the exotic (avocado) to the classic (Rocky Road). We are so glad to have Mitchell’s donating some post-hike sweetness!
Pop Chips
All this talk of food is making us even more excited about the hike, especially now that San Francisco-based Pop Chips is supporting our hikers with their light and truly tasty snacks. No greasy hands for our hikers!
The Real Food Company
Based in San Francisco for over 40 years, The Real Food Company is sure to deliver quality goods. They’ll be donating sandwiches made from their all natural ingredients—that means no artificial additives, preservatives or colors for our hikers!
Rickshaw
How do we love you, Rickshaw? Let us count the ways: 1) Awesome employees on Team Rickshaw, 2) Thank You Bags so kindly donated, 3) Financial sponsorship and longtime support of ATC. Oh and you produce your bags in SF! Yeah, that about sums it up!
Rita Flores Williams
Rita has graced ATC with her baking magic in the past, and we’re psyched that she’s baking for the hike! Since she’s been cooking professionally in SF for 10 years in fine dining kitchens, bakeries, and confectionaries, you can rest assured: Her brownies are a delight!
The Sandwich Place
For sandwiches that delight the taste buds, fill the belly, and don’t break the bank, the Sandwich Place is the go-to spot. If you’ve ever been, you’ve met (and loved) their proprietor, Juan, who is donating a platter of deliciousness just for us!
The Sandwich Spot
Though they have several NorCal locations, you won’t have to travel any farther than the Bootjack rest stop to taste these awesome, hearty sandwiches! We may have to choose based on name alone…The Pastrami Mommy? The Veggie Weggie? Hmm…
Sports Basement
Our friends at Sports Basement are making it happen for the hike, donating sport drinks, energy chews, and water coolers! They’re basically the experts in all things outdoors- and sports-related, so we’re going to go ahead and imbibe what they’ve got to offer.
Sukhi’s Authentic Indian Cuisine
Sukhi rocks. As a longtime supporter of ATC, her and her family have fed us on multiple occasions and we never get tired of her flavorful curry pastes, spice mixes and chutneys! Based in the Bay Area since 1992, Sukhi certainly knows her stuff.
Susie Cakes
Specializing in all things Americana and delicious, Susie Cakes bakes treats that call to mind kids’ birthday parties and after-school snacks. Their donated baked goods will certainly sweeten our hikers’ post-summit experience!
Sweet
Not only is Sweet, SF’s premier eco-friendly lesbian “voluntourism” agency, hiking with us on August 15th, they’re also donating a prime stash of energy bars. Their company has a strong focus on philanthropy and community—be sure to say ‘Hi’ on the trail!
Sweet Dish
Part old-time-y candy shop, part trendy boutique, Sweet Dish has been serving up their sweet treats to the Marina since 2007. And on the hike, those delicious goodies are being served up to you! If after the hike you can’t get enough…they’ve got an online store, too!
Taylor’s Tonics
Taylor’s Tonics are more than your average soda. Using old school brewing techniques and healthful ingredients, their flavors like Chai Cola and Mate Mojito are unlike any you have had before. Don’t worry, you’ll be introduced to their donated drinks on the 15th!
Trader Joe’s
The fine people at Trader Joe’s are helping us out with a gift certificate for our Summer SunDay needs! Unfortunately there won’t be any Two Buck Chuck on the hike, but we’re just as big of fans when it comes to their other treats!
Whole Foods
Not only will Whole Foods be providing our hikers with energy and fruit bars, they’ll be donating eco-friendly bags to transport all the awesome stuff our hikers will be receiving. And since that’s a lot of awesome stuff, we’re super excited!
Yerena Farms
These Watsonville-bred berries will be making their way up to the mountain for your eating pleasure on the 15th, by way of the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market. These are organic berries here, raised by the Yerena siblings and their parents for over 20 years!
You Name it Promotions
The wonderful women at You Name it Promotions are making and donating custom Summer SunDay water bottles for all of our hikers! That’s a pretty sweet souvenir in our books! We’re so glad to have them as supporters.

Summer SunDay Needs You!

ATC's Summer SunDay needs your help! 100 people will be hiking up Mt. Tam on August 15 to raise money for ATC. In order to make the hike as AMAZING as possible, we are asking our community if they have connections with any businesses that might be able to sponsor our hike, or to provide the following items in-kind or deeply discounted. Think outside the box (like your mom's boyfriend's nephew works for REI) and we'll do the rest.
Any businesses sponsoring Summer SunDay will be acknowledged:
a. On the homepage of the hike website (expected 50,000 hits)
b. On the back of each t-shirt we print for the hike
c. In our newsletter, which is distributed to 2,500 people
d. In our e-newsletter, which is distributed to 1,500 people
Please check out the list and let us know what you've got! You can email Tim at timp@atthecrossroads.org with any names you might have.
We are looking for financial sponsors who can give anywhere from $250-$5,000.
We are looking to get the following items for our hike:
Food & Drinks:
1) Sandwiches
2) Energy Bars
3) Cookies/ Cupcakes/brownie/other sweets
4) Salad
5) Trail Mix
6) Ice Cream
7) Sparkling Cider
